Well today is the day.

Seven months of procrastination and one week of sheer panic have lead us to opening night of Play It Again Sams.

It’s going to be a great show – do come along. There is going to be a backflip. A standing backflip, I do believe. Plus comedy, music and more Sam-based puns than you can throw a Sam at.

We are mere days away from the commencement of the NZ International Comedy festival. This is the best time of year for comedy in NZ with a bajillion shows on, and espeically because one of those shows is Play It Again Sams starring myself and Sam Irwin. Do buy tickets in advance – it makes me able to sleep at night if I know a few people are coming to see the show.

In other news, The Wilde Bunch is currently rehearsing with a stellar cast, and will film begin filming in a few weeks. It may be being renamed Happy Campers, so watch out for that title as well.

Looking ahead, I’m putting together a superlative group of ex-Capping Show and current Wellington Improv Troupe people for a revue show for August. More word on News Zealand coming after the comedy festival.

Just got back from my week in Dunedin. Had a great time, learned a lot about afternoon napping, and caught up with many friends. I’m now back in Wellington until Friday, when I go to Disneyland. And some other places, but Disneyland’s the main one.

Before I go, I’m judging the Wellington Raw Comedy Quest heat on Thursday. I won this bad boy last year, so I’m hoping all the contestants are way more shit than I was.

This week I am returning to the city of my University education (round 1) to perform in the Dunedin Fringe Festival as part of the Polson Higgs Comedy Club. There’s a sponsor’s performance night on Wednesday, and then performances Thursday through Saturday for the public.

I’m very excited to be performing with Finn Roy, who I have performed with in many shows since 2002. Simon McKinney is headlining – I hope this gig goes better than the last one I did with him, a gig I refer to as “The Big Bomb”. The MC is James Nokise who I have performed with one hundred times in the last two months, and currently has an afro that I am one hundred percent jealous of.

Then on Monday 19th March I’m performing in Song Sale – a wonderful format which has free entry, then audience members pay $5 to commission a song. They give us a title and a genre and twenty minutes later we perform the song. It’s a great fun night, to round off a great fun week.

This Friday I am performing in the Young Guns Comedy Showcase at Little Theatre in Lower Hutt. Hosted by my Class Comedians mentor Jeremy Elwood, featuring James Nokise, Jerome Chandrahasen, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, and my other fellow Wellington comedians Rock Threlfo, Hilaire Carmody, Jonny Potts, and Brad Zimmerman. This is going to be a super fun night.

My lovely friends Jen and Kate, and my even lovelier wife Meg are performing in the Wellington Fringe Festival with their original show Flights of Fancy.

It’s a comedy about love, airlines, and songs of yesteryear. I’ve written a few jokes for the show, and made a few backing tracks. It’s going to be really funny, with great songs, and is not to be missed.

I’m very excited to be working with fellow Sam (Irwin) in a two-header in the Wellington leg of the comedy festival this May. Look how funny he is! And this is a only a photo of a split second of time. Imagine spending an hour with this guy in person as he tells jokes and stories and plays music. It’s very exciting.

My New Year’s Resolution this year is 1920 x 1080. My real resolution is to write 10 jokes a day. It’s a tip Drew Carey suggested in a book I once read. Although the 10 jokes may not be fantastic, the shear number of jokes means you’re bound to get material that can be moulded and shaped into gold. I’m 25 days into the year, and have already amassed 250 jokes.

The sitcom I’ve been working on received funding from NZ On Air in the December application round. It stars Tammy Davis and Oliver Driver. We’re currently storylining, and will begin scripting soon. The aim at this stage is to film in May, and TV3 will air it sometime after that.
